On Wednesday, two former UCL champions will face off. In the Uefa Champions League quarter-finals, FC Porto will face Chelsea.

FC Porto vs Chelsea

On Wednesday, FC Porto hosts Chelsea in the first leg of their quarter-final tie at the Estadio do Dragao, featuring two former Uefa Champions League winners. The English Premier League side won the 2012 title after edging Bayern Munich in a penalty shootout on their own Allianz Arena turf. Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho rose to prominence in 2004 after leading his Portuguese club to a 3-0 final victory over Monaco before leaving a week later… for Chelsea. This time around, there has been plenty of drama as the two teams compete for a place in the final four.

With a 3-0 aggregate victory, the Blues left Diego Simeone and his Atletico Madrid side spitting feathers. The Argentinian coach was frustrated not only by the result, but also by the fact that the second leg was held at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium despite his team being denied home advantage in the first leg due to the Spanish government’s Covid-19 restrictions. The tale was all about Porto on the pitch, as they beat old rival Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates in a dramatic extra-time victory in Turin. They lost 3-2 on the night after leading 2-1 after the first leg, but advanced on away goals thanks to Sergio Oliveira’s goal in the 115th minute.
This time, there is no Ronaldo to contend with, but Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel has a nearly completely fit squad to choose from. On the injury front, N’Golo Kante and Christian Pulisic seem to be the only exceptions, while Antonio Rudiger was hoofed off the training ground after his brawl with Kepa Arrizabalaga on Sunday. Kai Havertz can get the nod in front of Timo Werner and Olivier Giroud, despite their lack of experience. Mehdi Taremi, who was sent off for Porto in Italy, will miss out due to suspension, while Malang Sarr, who is on loan from his parent club, will not be able to play against them.
Injury has ruled out Mouhamed Mbaye and Ivan Marcano, but coach Sergio Conceicao should have Zaidu Sanusi available after the defender’s promising return.
