Project to scrap NYSC in the House of Reps in second reading

The second reading of the National Youth Service Corps NYSC was made in the House of Representatives following calls for an end to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Alteration Act 2020 which seeks to repeal the NYSC Act. In the explanatory memorandum of the proposal the sponsor, Mr Awaji-Inombek Abiante, explained the different reasons for the dismissal of NYSC. The declaration read in part;

‘Section 315(5)(a) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) is repealed on the following grounds: ‘The incessant killing of members of innocent bodies in parts of the country due to bands, religious extremism and ethnic violence; and the incessant abduction of members of innocent bodies throughout the country;’

“The NYC management is now considering postponing corps members to their geopolitical areas due to insecurity across the country, which is defeating one of the goals of setting up the services corps, namely developing common ties between Nigerian youth in order to promote national unity and integration.” “
