The refusal of Buhari to nominate Igbo COAS shows that he doesn't believe in Nigeria — Hurila Hurila

The human rights defenders’ group of the Association of Human Rights Writers of Nigeria, which was called upon to reappoint a Northerner as Chief of Army Staff, met on Thursday with Major General Muhammadu Buhari. The President’s refusal to appoint a COAS from the south-east area of the country shows in a statement that he does not believe in the nation’s unity, National Coordinator of the HURIWA, Emmanuel Onwubiko.

The PUNCH had previously reported that, following the tragic death of former COAS Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, Major General Farouk Yahaya appointed as the new Head of Army Staff on Thursday. It is from Northern Nigeria that both Attahiru and his successor. As none of the five appointees was of Igbo extraction, the President of the Apex Igbo Socio-cultural Organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, criticized the President of four service leaders as well as an acting inspector general of the policy. The Federal Government’s injustice led by Buhari was said to be responsible for the growing agitation and insecurity in the South East by Ohanaeze.

In response to the latest appointment of a new COAS, HURIWA called on the President not to distribute its appointments in all the socio-ethnic interests in the country, in a statement entitled: “The New Chief: We Are No Longer Shocked By Buhari’s Primitive nepotism.” The declaration partly reads, “Presidency Buhari’s shameless, nepotist decision to continue unlawful and unconstitutional violations of the Nigerian Constitutional provision of federal character by only appointing Hausas/Fulanis as savage internal security posts is reprehensible and wholly toxic.” By its aversion to respect the principle of the federal nature, the group accused Buhari of violating his constitutional oath of office.

HURIWA adds: “Anyone who does not believe in Nigeria will continue to retain Buhari’s refusal of the Southeast Nigerian army chief of staff even when he is the eldest of major generals.”
