NEWS FLASH: The United States has imposed requirements on the Taliban government in Afghanistan.

Recognizing a Taliban government in Afghanistan comes with restrictions from the US. On Monday, US Department of State spokesman Ned Price said that the US will only recognize a Taliban administration in Afghanistan provided it respects women’s rights and shuns and denounces extremist groups like Al-Qaeda. “Ultimately, our attitude toward any future government in Afghanistan will be determined by that government’s conduct. When asked about recognition, State Price said, “It will depend on the Taliban’s activities.”

“We would be able to cooperate with a future Afghan government that supports the basic rights of its people, does not house terrorists, and defends the basic rights of its people, including the core fundamental rights of half of its population – its women and girls,” Price told AFP. He said that US Afghanistan negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad was still in Qatar, the Taliban’s diplomatic base, and that US officials were in negotiations with the rebels there.

In addition, US President Joe Biden stated that the Taliban’s treatment of women and girls in Afghanistan will be prioritized. This was stated by Biden during his Monday national address.
