Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice on his Manchester United homecoming, as the Red Devils strolled to victory over Newcastle and delighted a raucous Old Trafford crowd.

Ronaldo repaid the support in the greatest possible way, from the moment he left the team coach on arrival at the venue, through the warm-up, and then once the game had started.

Ronaldo broke the deadlock in first-half extra time when visiting goalie Freddie Woodman spilled Mason Greenwood’s effort, 12 years after he last scored for Manchester United in this stadium.

After former Liverpool defender Javier Manquillo had equalized for Newcastle with his first goal, Ronaldo completed a flowing play by racing onto Luke Shaw’s through ball and smashing a low shot through Woodman’s legs.

Bruno Fernandes scored the game’s first goal after collecting a square ball from Paul Pogba and curling a shot into the top corner from the edge of the area, before substitute Jesse Lingard added a fourth in added time.

Steve Bruce’s team had a narrow victory margin despite playing brilliantly for long stretches. Newcastle’s efforts, though, were unimportant to the euphoric home fans, who had the extra advantage of seeing their team return to the Premier League’s top spot.
